The Graduate Program in Tropical Medicine of Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (PGMT/IOC/Fiocruz) aims to form higher level professors and researchers at the masters or doctorate, qualifying them to the development of basic and applied research in the area of infectious and parasitic diseases, providing training for the identification and management issues associated with clinical , epidemiological and laboratory aspects.

The program  belongs to the Medical Area II, being evaluated by Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior [1] (Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education [2] - Capes), in the 2009-2012 triennium, with concept 6. Since 2007, the course has character multidisciplinary, admitting professionals with degrees in health area, as well as those related to biomedical sciences.

The master course aims to development of technical and scientific training, the initial academic the descriptive, analytical and experimental studies in Tropical Medicine. The doctorate course aims to development scientific skills to delineation and conduct original and independent research, dealing with analytical and experimental studies in infectious and parasitic diseases and related fields.

The aims of PGMT:

- Educate competencies to perform research and develop processes, products and methodologies in natural history, diagnosis, epidemiology and control of infectious and parasitic diseases;

- Provide theoretical and practical tools and knowledge for translational research in infectious and parasitic diseases, integrating established technologies and innovative research in the biomedical field to the recognition of the historical, socio-economic, demographic, cultural and environmental determinants of communicable diseases;

- Encourage interdisciplinary scientific reasoning and critical thinking related to research in the biomedical field at national and international levels;

- Qualify human resources to incorporated the board of institutions faculty of higher education institutions;

- Training researchers to develop innovative and independent research lines;

- Integrate science and society through inclusion of teachers and students in community-based studies and in science communication activities.

The students will be trained to work in field and laboratory researches, with stimulus for the development of projects for integrated study of the human population, etiological agents, reservoirs, vectors and environment, one or more models of infectious or parasitic diseases. The program encourages translational research projects in molecular epidemiology, genetic and phylogenetic of pathogens and immunogenetics, integrated to the classical epidemiology and clinical studies in diseases.

The program has the collaboration with the laboratories of research, technological development and innovation, dedicated to the study and creation of products and supplies for various diseases in the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz). In theoretical and practical activities, students have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and to live with experienced researchers in the field of infectious and parasitic diseases. In these laboratories, students also have the opportunity to develop their dissertation, thesis and manuscript, integrating the existing lines of research or even, in some cases, in doctorate, participate in the creation of new lines.

The  Laboratories of IOC [3] are grouped into areas of research and human knowledge. The IOC Laboratories network gathers 21 Reference Services of national and regional coverage, providing consulting and advice in their respective areas, as well as promote training of qualified human resources for Public Health Laboratories and public institutions. The Reference Services accredited as Collaborating Centers of the World Health Organization (OMS) and Pan American Health Organization (OPAS) actively participate in various international programs in their areas of coverage, including, for example, leptospirosis, leishmania, measles, respiratory viruses and polio classification, as well as Chagas disease vectors taxonomy. The program also counts with a set of Technological platforms [4] available to students of masters and doctorate.
